A reminder sticker can help bring customers back, but only if it reaches the vehicle, shows accurate information and is easy to understand. A quick audit can reveal whether your shop’s process is consistent, or whether stickers are being skipped, left blank, placed poorly or explained too quickly.

Use this 20-minute check to review five recently serviced vehicles and your shop’s related tire and handoff procedures. It works for independent garages, tire shops, mechanics and dealership service departments.

The 20-minute audit

Minutes 0–4: Check five recently serviced vehicles

Pull five vehicles that have recently completed service. For each one, inspect the windshield reminder.

Record whether the sticker is:

  • Present
  • Filled in
  • Legible

A sticker that is missing, blank or difficult to read does not count as a successful reminder. Note whether the issue appears isolated or happens across several vehicles. If the same field is repeatedly blank, the problem is probably a workflow issue, not an individual mistake.

Minutes 4–7: Verify size and windshield placement

The windshield service reminder should be a true-to-life 2 × 2 inches. It belongs on the inside face of the windshield, in the top-left corner from the perspective of a driver seated inside a Canadian left-hand-drive vehicle.

Check that the sticker is:

  • Readable from inside the cabin
  • Positioned consistently near the driver-side upper corner
  • Outside the driver’s direct forward line of sight
  • Clear of the steering wheel, sensors, cameras, factory labels and other equipment

Never apply a reminder sticker to the steering wheel. Do not put it where it blocks the driver’s view. If the usual corner is unsuitable because of sensors, tint, glass shape or existing markings, choose a safe alternative that does not obstruct visibility or equipment.

For more application guidance, see How to Apply Windshield Maintenance Labels. Transport Canada also provides guidance on limiting visual obstructions and distractions in vehicles.

Minutes 7–10: Audit the written information

Check the required fields on your custom oil change stickers and other service reminders:

  • Service date
  • Next service KM
  • Shop phone number
  • Shop website

Every field should be complete, accurate and easy to read. Use kilometres and write the unit clearly as KM. If the sticker is for a maintenance light or check-engine reminder, it should also identify the service advisor or department the customer should contact.

A sticker that says when to return but not how to reach your shop is missing an important part of the handoff. Review your custom oil change reminder stickers and custom maintenance reminder stickers to see how a custom layout can make room for your contact details and service information.

Minutes 10–12: Check the tire re-torque process

Review a recent wheel installation or rotation. Was a tire re-torque sticker applied? Does it state the interval in kilometres? Is the customer told what to do next?

About 100 KM after a wheel installation or rotation is a common Canadian reference for a re-torque reminder. It is a common practice, not a legal requirement or a universal interval for every vehicle and wheel. Follow your shop’s approved procedure and the applicable vehicle or wheel manufacturer’s guidance. Continental’s Canadian re-torque information discusses checking wheels after installation.

Make sure the sticker is visible to the customer from inside the cabin, correctly placed, and consistent with the interval your shop has approved. The reminder supports communication; it does not replace your shop’s documented wheel-service procedure. Explore custom tire re-torque stickers if your current format does not clearly communicate the return instruction.

Minutes 12–15: Inspect tire storage labels

Check how your team identifies stored tires. Confirm each label is attached to the right item and can be read when staff retrieve the set.

Use the correct size for the application:

  • 6 × 4-inch labels: apply to tire treads.
  • 4 × 3-inch labels: apply to tire treads.
  • 3 × 2-inch labels: use on bagged tires.

Pricing is based on sticker area. A 6 × 4-inch label covers the same printed area as two 4 × 3-inch labels: both equal 24 square inches in total. Choose the format that fits your storage workflow, then keep the customer and tire information legible. See custom tire storage stickers for the available sizes.

Canadian storage conditions can be demanding. Rain, snow, road salt and temperature swings are realistic conditions tires and their labels may encounter, especially during seasonal handling. Sticker choice and application should suit the environment where your tires are stored.

Minutes 15–17: Match generic or custom to the job

Generic reminder stickers are supplied in fixed, pre-designed formats, with typically one or two designs to choose from for a product. They are useful when a standard layout meets your needs.

If your shop needs a different arrangement, custom contact information, a department-specific message or extra fields, choose a custom sticker instead. Do not force a stock format to carry information it was not designed to hold. The goal is a reminder your team can complete accurately and your customer can understand at a glance.

Minutes 17–20: Ask an advisor to explain the sticker

Ask a service advisor to explain a reminder to a customer at handoff in under one minute. The explanation should cover what the sticker means, when the customer should return and who to contact with a question. For re-torque reminders, the advisor should say the interval in kilometres and reinforce the shop’s approved return instruction.

If staff hesitate or give different answers, update the wording on the sticker, clarify your procedure or provide a short handoff script.

Score the program

Score each step from 0 to 2, for a maximum of 14 points. For the five-vehicle sample in Step 1, award 2 points for five successful reminders, 1 point for four, and 0 points for three or fewer. For other steps, use the criteria below.

Audit area 2 points 1 point 0 points
Five-vehicle sample All five stickers are present, filled in and legible One vehicle has a problem Two or more vehicles have a problem
Size and placement Correct 2 × 2-inch size and safe, consistent placement One placement or size issue Repeated errors, obstruction or steering-wheel placement
Required fields All required fields are complete; maintenance contact included where relevant Occasional missing or unclear information Frequent omissions or incorrect units
Re-torque reminders Applied for applicable work with an approved KM interval One process gap No consistent process or unclear interval
Tire storage labels Correct size, application and readable information Inconsistent use Frequent mismatches or poor identification
Generic versus custom Stock format fits, or custom format used when needed Some layout compromises The format does not serve the shop’s needs
Customer handoff Advisor explains the reminder clearly in under a minute Explanation is inconsistent No clear explanation at handoff

What your score means

  • 12–14: Working well. Keep the process in place. Review it periodically and check that new staff follow the same standard.
  • 8–11: Inconsistent. Start with the issues that affect the most customers: missing stickers, incomplete fields or unclear placement. Assign an owner to check the process.
  • 0–7: Needs attention. Standardize the reminder workflow before focusing on design. Make the application step, required fields and customer explanation part of the service handoff.

Fix the process before ordering more

A larger sticker order will not solve an inconsistent process. First decide who completes each reminder, which fields are mandatory, where the sticker goes and what advisors should say. Then confirm that the design and material fit the task.

For windshield reminders, StickerPlanet.ca offers options including 8-mil static cling and approximately 3-mil removable low-tack vinyl, depending on the product and configuration. Tire storage labels use permanent or high-tack vinyl options suited to their application. StickerPlanet.ca uses eco-solvent inks for all stickers.

StickerPlanet.ca manufactures in Canada using premium North American materials and offers fast 2-business-day tracked and insured shipping. There are no hidden costs. Review the product options for custom oil change stickers, tire re-torque stickers and tire storage stickers, then choose the format that supports a clear, repeatable service process.
